"Xieyi" is Anders Jormin's first album as a leader for ECM, but the Swedish bassist (born in Jönköping in ) has been a powerful presence on recordings for the label over the last decade, including Charles Lloyd's "Notes from Big Sur", "The Call", "All My Relations", and "Canto", Don Cherry's "Dona Nostra", Bobo Stenson's "Reflections", "War Orphans", and "Serenity", and Tomasz Stanko's "Matka .

On Xieyi, as a result of the breadth of source material and the care taken to vary the nature of each track, Jormin has succeeded in producing a disc that holds the listener's attention throughout. On the hymn "Giv Mig ej Glans" Jormin brings out the warmth of its essentially folk-like melody, much as Charlie Haden did with his Spanish Civil War songs.

9. Sep 14,  · The accompanying CD booklet informs us that Xieyi was recorded in one swoop on a rainy December evening. Yet the music is anything but compressed or dank. Rather, it soothes with a warm respect for the many sources recalled at Jormin’s fingertips.
